Arborist insurance for field work and consulting

Arborists do two kinds of work: physical tree care and professional advice. Arborist insurance should cover both.

This content is for general information only. It is not insurance advice, a quote, or an offer of coverage. Policy wording controls in all cases. Read the full disclaimer.

What arborist insurance usually includes

  • General liability for bodily injury and property damage caused by pruning, removals, cabling, planting and plant health care.
  • Commercial auto for bucket trucks, chip trucks and pickups, including liability while towing a chipper. More on auto.
  • Equipment coverage (inland marine) for chippers, grinders, climbing gear and saws. Blanket vs scheduled.
  • Arborist errors and omissions for tree risk assessments, appraisals and written reports. Arborist E&O.
  • Workers compensation, which most states require once you have employees. Ask about it when someone contacts you.

Why arborists are harder to insure than landscapers

Underwriters look closely at how high you work, whether you climb or use a bucket truck, whether cranes are involved, and whether you work near power lines. Removal work, storm clean-up and utility line clearance each change which carriers will quote.

That is why the application asks for the tallest trees you work on, your work methods, and whether lines are de-energized before you cut. Honest answers up front mean fewer surprises at renewal or after a claim.

Certification can help

ISA certification, TRAQ, and a documented safety program show underwriters you run a professional operation. Mention any credentials and training on your application.

Common questions

Is arborist insurance the same as tree trimmer insurance?

They overlap. Tree trimmer insurance usually means general liability for trimming and removal. Arborist insurance often adds professional liability for consulting work like assessments and appraisals.

Does arborist insurance cover damage to the tree I'm working on?

Damage to property in your care, custody or control is often limited or excluded under general liability. Read the policy and ask about it when you get your quote.

Can I get arborist insurance with prior claims?

Often, yes. Carriers want the details: what happened, what was paid, and what you changed afterward. The application asks for that.
